CUFFLEY
HERTFORDSHIRE
CUFFLEY was once an area of natural mineral springs considered to
be beneficial to health, which attracted the attention of jaded royal parties - who then
hunted deer and other wild animals on the surrounding open grass and woodland.
The village began to flourish when the Great Northern Railway extended its tracks from
Enfield to Hertford - which led to the construction of the landmark Cuffley viaduct and,
later, Cuffley station.
During the First World War Cuffley was the venue of the famous shooting down of a German
Zeppelin airship on to adjacent fields. Hordes of sightseers and souvenir hunters flocked
to the scene to pick up pieces of the Zeppelin to make into brooches, fobs and other
commemorative pieces. The man responsible for the airship's demise was Captain Leefe
Robinson, a memorial to whom stands on a corner of East Ridgeway.
Although very close to the industrial heart of London, the village is surrounded by some
of the oldest woodland in the country, the Great Wood and Home Wood, and is a haven for
country walks and rides.
